      1、Writing

Directions: for this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Is the Ban on Abusive Language Online Helpful? You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below.

Is the Ban on Abusive Language Online Helpful?

Recently, the topic whether the ban on abusive language on the Internet is helpful or not has arou

sed great attention and debate. Some people believe it helpful while others doubt its effectiveness.

Those in favor of this move state that imposing the ban on online abuse is a counterattack against the deterioration of the communication method on the Internet. More significantly, it’s no doubt that the ban gives positive guidance to either netizens or the public and helps encourage higher morality. However, other people oppose that the ban, as a matter of fact, is unnecessary and difficult to practice, for the users can well disguise their true identity. Furthermore, morality should be something rooted in an inpidual’s heart so to underline the ban will do nothing to encourage people to be more polite.

Personally speaking, I agree with the former opinion. Abusive language online, in most cases illogical, is a desperate insult to suppress others’ ideas. Thus, ban concerning this issue can offer helpful instructions to the netizens. In addition, it also contributes to promoting the moral standards of the whole society.

2、Directions: for this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Is Offering Seats Compulsory for Young Bus Riders? You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below.

Is Offering Seats Compulsory for Young Bus Riders?

In recent years, there have been many disputes about young’s giving seats to the elderly on buses. Some people maintain that the elderly are physically weak and are more prone to falling and getting hurt when standing on a moving bus. Therefore, young people, especially those taking the priority seats, have obligation to offer the seats to senior citizens to prevent potential hurt.

Some people, however, think the other way. Young passengers, they say, pay for the bus trip, so they enjoy the same right as the senior citizens to use the seats on the bus. Besides, many young riders, though physically strong, can’t escape being exhausted by a day’s work and are in great need the seats on the buses too. Forcing them to give up the seats seems inhuman and unfair.

In my view, whether it is compulsory for the young to give up their seats to needy riders depends on the kind of seats they take. In general, it is a moral requirement for young passengers on regular seats to do so. However, for those sitting on priority seats, it is a legal obligation.

3、Directions: for this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled My view on charity. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below.

My View on CharityCharity is of the utmost importance to our society. While following a series of scandals, some inpiduals and institutions involved in this field have encountered criticism in recent months.

There are several reasons for this phenomenon. Above all, compared with those of developed countries, the charity awareness in our country is still backward. Some people equal charity with donation, and therefore they believe that charity is the rich’s responsibility and has nothing to do with the middle-class and the working people. The second thing that must be taken into consideration is that a number of inpiduals and charitable organizations lack a sense of social responsibility, which results in the declining social credibility.

For my part, I believe that the following steps can address this situation. Firstly, people’s awareness of how profound influence charity can bring to our society should be heightened. Secondly, rigorous supervision must be carried out by the administration involved, so that the charity activities will become more transparent.

4、Directions: for this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled How to face Frustration by commenting on the famous saying, “Our greatest glory consists not in falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

      How to Face Frustration

Frustration is unavoidable in life. Faced with frustration, some people are defeated while others conquer it and succeed. In the long history of human beings, many famous people have set good examples for us.

Strong-minded person can not be defeated by frustration. It is frustration that will breed success. Zhang Haidi is a case in point. Disable as she is, she obtained the master degree in Philosophy and acquire four foreign languages. As far as we know, Edison had made experiments for eight thousand times before electric light was invented. As the old saying goes, our greatest glory consists not only in falling, but in rising every time we fall.  All in all, when the unexpected frustration comes, we must get up the courage to conquer it. Furthermore, we should learn from our failures so that we can steer ourselves through failures next time and embark on the road to success.

5、The university’s Branch Campuses in Suburban Areas

In recent years more and more universities have built up their branch campuses in suburban areas. Now it is very difficult to find a university without a branch campus. Maybe no one can tell clearly when the first branch campus came out.

But the reasons behind this phenomenon are obvious. Among these reasons, the enrollment expansion of universities plays a very vital role. As more and more freshmen are remitted to universities, the original facilities, including classrooms, apartments, dining houses, laboratories and the like, are not enough any more. What’s more, the land in the suburb is relatively low in price, which is affordable for most universities. Besides, the quiet environment in suburban areas is more suitable for students to study.

As a college student, I think, it is necessary and beneficial for many universities to build up a branch campus. However the building of branch campuses brings some problems. For one thing, the students in some branch campuses cannot enjoy good enough facilities and the teachers due to limited resources. For another it leads to less direct communications among teachers and students. Therefore the university should take a full account before it decides to build up a branch campus.

      6、social Practice of College Students

Nowadays, many universities encourage and organize students to take part in social practice activities. During the holidays, more and more students choose to be the volunteers, take part-time jobs or take part in other practical activities alike.

It is obvious that social practice is playing a more and more important role in Chinese college education. Undoubtedly, college students have benefited a lot from social practice. Above all, there are provided with more opportunities to contact the real world outside the campus. Moreover, in social practice activities, students can apply their knowledge to solution to practical problems. So the social practice skills are improved greatly. Besides, social practice help strengthen students since social responsibility. Considering the above mentions, I think it is necessary for college students to participant in social practice. However, social practice may bring some problems. For example, some students spend too much time in taking part-time jobs so as to ignore their study. Therefore, we should try to balance relationship between social practice and study

In recent years, to get a certificate has become a new craze among college students. Just randomly, ask a student on campus what he or she is busy doing, quite possibly, you may get the answer that he or she is preparing for a certificate of some kind.

Why does this craze appear? There are two mainly reasons behind this phenomenon. First, it is the employments pressure that forces college students to get more certificates. With the admission expansion of colleges, a large more graduates have to face the fierce competition in the job markets. How can one make himself more competitive, more certificates at hands maybe. Second, the diplomas and certificates are still important standard by which many employers measure a person’s ability in order to increase qualification for a job, the students compel themselves to run from one exam to another.

Form my point of view, we should be more rational when it comes to certificates, since certificates do not necessarily prove one’s ability, being crazy in getting certificates blindly. It is nothing but wasting time. To conclude, we should focus on improving our ability but not getting a certificate of no practical value.

8、Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Reserving a Seat. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

        1)很多大学里“占座”现象十分普遍

        2)这种现象会带来哪些影响

        3)你 对此的看法

      Reserving a Seat

We often see there is a book, a bottle of water or something else on the desk in the classroom or library, indicating the seat is taken. This kind of phenomenon is very usual in almost all colleges and universities. Strangely enough, most of students seem to take this for granted, and few will protest it.

Though most of students’ taking seats in advance is for better study, this kind of phenomenon has great negative effects. On the one hand, it is a selfish behavior, which damages other students’ interests. Sometimes even if many students come to the classroom very early, they can not find a seat. On the other hand, reserving a seat violates the rule of fairness. No matter how late you come to class, the seat is still reserved for you even though many others are eager for that seat.

Considering the above-mentioned, I think, it is high time that we college students took a good look of our behavior. Indeed, only if all of us can improve our consciousness, it is not a difficult task for us to get rid of this kind of phenomenon “reserving a seat”.

9、Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a letter in reply to a friend’s inquiry about Plan after graduation. You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below in Chinese:   假如你是李明,你的朋友石头来信咨询你的毕业之后的计划,考研还是就业,请根据自己的情况写封回信告知石头你的态度,并说明理由。

      Dear Shitou,

So great to receive your letter on May 1st, in which you inquired about my plan after graduation. Now, I am writing to illustrate it and my accounts.

As is known to all, so many graduates are eager to set feet on their work-life roads. According to a survey by National Department of Education, more than six million college students will leave the so called “Ivory Tower” this year. It is clear that the competition of job-hunting will be extremely furious. On the contrary, it seems advisable for me to further my study and get a master’s degree. What makes me convinced is that a higher degree and better educational background will, undoubtedly, enable me to make full preparation for entering the society. Besides, if possible, I will get involved in social and practical activities in my spare time.

Taking all aspects into account, I choose to study as a postgraduate。

Many thanks for your concern. Best wishes!

      10、Should We Help Strangers?

      Should We Help Strangers?

Helping strangers has always been considered as a treasured virtue of human kind .We need help from others throughout our life, whenever we travel to other places or stay at home .On the other hand, helping others can make us happy .We feel great joy when we are trusted, needed and able to give a hand.

However ,some people are cautious when it comes to helping strangers .They say that helping others involves risks of getting hurt or cheated .Lending a hand to a stranger often puts us in a vulnerable position for it means trusting a hand to a stranger often puts us in a vulnerable position for it means trusting someone we do not even know .Moreover ,there are times when we have physical limitations- e.g. we can’t swim but a girl is drowning .If we are blind to that limitation ,giving a hand would conversely take our life.

In my opinion, we should still offer what we can do to help needed strangers. Meanwhile, we should beware of getting cheated and use common sense to tell whether the strangers are real needed people or just professional cheats .Detecting anything unusual, we should defend ourselves or turn to the police.

11、Don’t Rely Too Much on Computers

Don’t Rely Too Much on Computers

Do we relay too much on computers? Yes, we do. Almost everything we do and every aspect of our life is affected by modern technology with computers above all. We use computers in business, public services, education and entertainment.

However, overreliance on computer may give rise to some problems. One is that people are more likely to make spelling mistakes when they have to handwrite something. Another is that people are so dependent on computers that they have lost the ability to think for themselves. If “the computer says XYZ”, then XYZ must be true. If you want to make someone believe you like an idiot,  just tell him “that’s what the computer said”.

In my opinion, computers make our lives easier but we should never rely on them completely. These machines should be used as a tool to aid work rather than the only tool. Otherwise, chaos can occur when suddenly our computers crash or what is worse, refuse to take our orders.

      12、My View on Job-Hopping

Many people are inclined to do one job in their lives. In their opinions, people who change their jobs frequently are superficial and tactless. They believe that the only way to success is to stick to one job, for constant practice in a professional field helps make an txpert.

But there are still many people who don’t agree. They argue that change means progress. If you are not satisfied with your present job, of course you have the right to replace it with a more challenging and better paid one. Every change is a step to further success. This idea may be. the reason why they change their jobs so often.

For my part, I think it reasonable to change your job if you have a better opportuniry. But once you have found a position where you can fully display your ability, it is advisable to settle down to it and put all your efforts into it. Only in this way, can you get the true joy of achieving your goal

        Online Shopping

Several decades ago, it should be a marvelous wonder to purchase our favorite gifts only by clicking the mouse and then just waiting for the door knock by a smiling expressive delivery courier with the exact package you ordered. While, today, it is no long a rare case. Combined with the fast food, the digital communication , online shopping has been a common part of our life.

Admittedly, on line shopping offers magical convenience. For example, it saves time and offers numerous choices since floods of information can be supplied on Internet. While, every coin has tow sides and online shopping is no different. Have you still remembered the annoying time when you found the commodities you buy on Internet was not the slightest as what you had expected and long time had to be taken for its replace and even compensation. Actually, just with the seemingly beautiful pictures of the products on Internet, it is hard for us to make rational choices. After all, seeing is believing.  Then, what should we do? The foremost is to enforce establish some relevant laws and regulations, with strong supervision over some shopping websites being reinforced as well. Then, the consumers also should be equipped with more alert in case of being trapped once again. Remember, any fast –and- easy things asks for big prices to be paid

How to improve psychological health?  As is known to all, psychological health is as important as, if not more important than, physical health for a student during his/her growth. However, it’s quite worrying that nowadays some students are not quite psychologically healthy. Undoubtedly, schools nd universities should take great account in the responsibilities of studentspsychological health. Relevant courses and activities should be introduced to students so that they would be more aware of the significance of psychological health and find appropriate ways to maintain and improve it. For example, there should be a psychological counseling hotline or office for students to turn to when they need some psychological aid.  Of course no psychological health can be obtained without the efforts from the students themselves. From my perspective, what they can do is trying to stay positive, optimistic and follow the right guidelines from their schools. To be more specific, they can participate in some activities such as voluntary work to cultivate an opening and caring mind. Meanwhile, harmful impacts from the cyber space should definitely be avoided

      15、On Blind-date Show

On Blind-date Show

Nowadays, the blind-date shows are becoming more and more popular. Whenever we turn on TV, those incredible scenes of blind-date shows would pop up on the screen. Many people, from teenagers to the elderly, are so crazy about these shows that they never miss a single chance to watch them.

Three reasons would contribute to the popularity of these blind-date shows. To begin with, there are over 180 million people who remain single long after they have reached official age for marriage. Moreover, a great number of people would like to amuse themselves by watching other people dating. Last but not least, more and more television producers add a couple of attractive elements to cater for the different tastes of the audiences.

In my view, the government should impose restrictions to these blind-date shows. Many of these shows advocate money-worship and materialism; quite a few of the guests' identities are artificial. If these problems are not solved, the misleading effects can bedisastrous.

      16、Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a Composition entitled The Prevalence of Western Holidays. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese:  1.我国某些传统节日受到冷遇,而西方节日却日益升温;

        2.形成这种现象的原因;

        3.你对这种现象的看法。

        范文:

        The Prevalence of Western Holidays

Many young people in China today prefer Western holidays to traditional Chinese festivals. Christmas is now celebrated by the younger generation all over China, and it has become especially popular as a romantic holiday for boyfriends and girlfriends or young married couples. Valentine's Day is also extremely popular, and even Halloween is being celebrated now.

This phenomenon has actually developed quite naturally in recent decades due to our educational system's focus on English study and therefore on English-speaking cultures. To many students, Western culture has become a symbol of self-expression and freedom from restraint. Celebrating Western holidays has become a way for students to express their love of something different from traditional Chinese culture, and to have fun together with their own generation.

In my opinion, it's fine for students learning English and studying English-speaking cultures to celebrate Western holidays with their teachers and classmates. However, the way I see it, unless the young people later go abroad to live in those cultures, there is no reason for them to continue to celebrate them. We Chinese should hold on to our traditional festivals, the festivals which we have celebrated for centuries.

      17、Credit Cards

        Credit Cards

Personal credit cards are becoming more common in China. Banks and other financial institutions are encouraging their customers to change the way they buy things. Credit cards, otherwise known as “plastic money”,are being offered on very good terms to encourage the change. Consumers will be able to “buy now, pay later”,and many see this as an advantage.  But people need to be careful. There are dangers associated with credit cards. Some people find it very easy to exceed their budget. They are tempted to purchase goods that they do not really need, and can become quickly overburdened by debt. The credit cards often charge a high rate of interest, which exacerbates the problems for these people.

However, wisely used credit cards can improve the quality of people’s lives. They can give people access to money to meet sudden unplanned expenses. Properly handled, they can let people control their expenditure and the monthly statements provide a record of where their money has gone.

18、Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled My Thoughts on the University Arts Festival. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese:

        1.表达你对即将举行的大学艺术节的看法;

        2.对艺术节具体内容和组成部分的建议。

          范文:

My Thoughts on the University Arts Festival

For our university's arts festival, I think that the university should hold open competitions and auditions for anyone who wants to take part in the festival's exhibitions and performances. This would not only increase general interest in and appreciation for the arts, but would also be a good way for our university to show its support for the arts.

This arts festival is an excellent opportunity to remind everyone that arts are important for everyone to appreciate and take part in, regardless of major.

I think that there should be general, open auditions and competitions in all the major arts. There should be categories for painting and sculpture; classical, folk and modem dance; and instrumental and choral groups, both large and small. The judges should be joint committees made up of both faculty and Students, both experts in the field and novices. Arranging the festival in this way will, I believe, give our student body a greater enjoyment of the arts, a break from studies and a fuller appreciation for what it means to be human.

      19、Pet Raising

        Pet Raising

Nowadays, with the improvement of the people’s livingstandard, some people form a habit of raising small or domestic animals aspets. Some raise small dogs or cats as their pets while others raise variousbirds or fishes as their pets。

However, some people object to the idea ofraising animalsas pets. To them, animals have their own right to live a natural life likehuman beings. On the other hand, the way people raise animals as pets have anegative influence on the surroundings, for example, dogs’ chasing people onthe street and so on. What’s more, some animals will transmit some diseases。(对比论证段)  In my opinion, I do not like the idea toraise animals atpets. We should not deprive them of their natural right. In this way, we willlive in a peaceful world in harmony with the other living creatures。

20、Should we help others in need?

Helping others has always been a virtue in traditional Chinese culture. But what’s strange nowadays is that people dare not show their helping hands to those in need. I would like to elaborate my views on this issue.

Firstly, I think people’s moral sense has degraded. When egoism gains the upper hand, many people find it growingly hard to help others. Secondly, there is no denying that some tragic events turn out to be traps by people with evil intentions. So common people are becoming more risk-conscious and are more wary of traps and deceits.

In general, I contend the idea that we should be warm-hearted and offer help as well as look out for potential hazards so as not to be deceived.
